Baseball plates 19 in victory over No. 19 Lions


Story Headlines
- The Northwest Missouri State University baseball team beat No. 19 Missouri Southern on Sunday, 19-15, at Warren Turner Field in Joplin, Mo.
- It was the most Bearcat runs scored since a 20-10 victory over Nebraska-Kearney back on March 13, 2015.
- The 17 hits tied the season-high set back on April 1, a 12-6 win over Pittsburg State.
- Northwest improved to 18-16 overall and 13-11 in MIAA play with the win. The Lions fall to 24-11 and 14-10 in conference action.
- Centerfielder Garrett Fort had a career-day, going 5-of-6 at the plate wiht six RBI, two runs scored and a stolen base.
- Ozzie Adams drove in four runs, going 2-for-7 with a run scored.
- Eight different Bearcat players recorded a hit and 10 players scored a run.
- Northwest also tied a season high with 12 walks, marching the mark set in a 12-10 win at Washburn on March 10.
- The three Bearcat home runs tied the mark set earlier in the week against Nebraska-Kearney on April 5.

Key Northwest Statistics
- Northwest scored three in the second, six in the third, six in the fourth and four in the ninth. On the day, the Bearcats had 19 runs on 17 hits with three errors.
- Missouri Southern had 15 runs on 16 hits with two errors. The Lions scored two in the first, two in the third, one in the fifth, one in the sixth, three in the seventh, four in the eighth and two in the ninth.
- Kevin Handzlik was 3-for-5 with three runs scored and two RBI. He hit his second home run of the year in the second inning. He also had a double and was hit by a pitch.
- Jake Lewis hit his second home run of the year in the third inning. He went 2-for-3 with two runs scored, two RBI, two walks and a double.
- James Holler was 2-for-5 with a run scored and a walk.
- Nick Gotta now leads the MIAA with 37 walks after earning four free passes on Sunday. He went 1-for-3 with two runs scored and two RBI.
- Jay Hrdlicka hit his first home run of the year in the third inning. He went 1-for4 with a pair of runs scored, two walks and had an RBI.
- Aaron Barratt was 1-for-4 with two runs scored. He stole two bases on the day.
- Kolby Greenslade drew three walks and scored three times.
- Austin Wulff picked up an RBI on a groundout. He entered the game in the top of the seventh inning.
- Brad Roberts started on the hill, going 6.0 innings. He struck out six baters and walked three.
- Carson Smith pitched the final three innings. He recorded three strikeouts and did not walk a batter.

Key Northwest Innings
- After falling behind in the first, Northwest responded with three runs in the second. Handzlik led off the frame with a homer to left field, his second home run of the year. With two outs, Fort hit a bases loaded single to score Barratt and Greenslade to make it 3-2 Bearcats. Barratt had reached on a fielder's choice then stole a base. Greenslade drew a walk with two down.

- Northwest got a two-out rally started in the third as Jake Lewis hit his second home run of the year to left to make it 4-2 Bearcats, prompting a pitching change. Hrdlicka then took a 2-1 pitch over the wall in right field to make it 5-2. Barratt singled and stole second. Greenslade and Gotta drew back-to-back walks to load the bases for Fort. Fort again came through with a big single, scoring two as he found a hole through the right side. Adams followed it up with another single to center to score Gotta and Fort to push the lead to 9-2.

- The Bearcats came up with six runs in the fourth to push the lead to 11. Lewis got an RBI ground-rule double to score Handzlik who started the inning by getting hit by a pitch. Hrdlicka walked and with two down, Gotta hit an RBI single to score Lewis to make it 11-4. Fort was hit by a pitch to load the bases again and a wild pitch allowed Hrdlicka to score, make it 12-4. Adams notched his second two-RBI single to center, scoring Fort and Gotta to make it 14-4. After a Lion pitching change, Holler singled to put runners on the corners. Handzlik, who started the inning, hit the Bearcats' second ground-rule double of the frame, scoring Adams to make it 15-4 Northwest.

- With one out and the bases loaded, Wulff grounded out to second to score Holler who led off the inning with a walk. Greenslade and Gotta drew back-to-back walks to drive in another run. With two down and the bases still loaded, Fort picked up his sixth RBI of the game with a single to center to drive in two, making it 19-13 Bearcats.
